Abstract

Tourism has emerged as a key contributor to China’s economic growth, playing a pivotal role in generating revenue, creating jobs, and fostering infrastructure development. This article reviews the existing literature on the intersection of tourism and China's economy, exploring the historical development of the sector, its economic impact, key drivers of growth, and the challenges it faces. The review highlights China’s transition from limited international engagement to a global tourism powerhouse, driven by government policies, cultural and natural attractions, technological advancements, and the rising middle class. Despite significant progress, the tourism industry faces challenges such as environmental degradation, regional disparities, and the impacts of global events like the COVID-19 pandemic. Emerging trends in niche tourism, sustainable practices, and digital innovations present new opportunities for growth. The article concludes with policy recommendations aimed at fostering sustainable development, promoting regional balance, and improving service quality, while stressing the need for further research to address gaps in rural tourism and post-pandemic recovery strategies. As China continues to navigate these challenges, the tourism sector is poised to remain a crucial component of its economic strategy and global identity.
